Where Nature is the Classroom and Curiosity Leads the Way

ROOTS Farm & Forest School is a nature-based learning community serving children ages 2–14 years across our campuses in Georgetown, Milton, Clayton, Frankford, and Townsend, Delaware. We offer a unique blend of preschool, elementary, and middle school programming (with high school coming soon), designed to meet families where they are—whether they are seeking an alternative schooling option, through our full, comprehensive, multi-family homeschool or just homeschool enrichment.
At ROOTS, education looks different—in the best way. Our students learn through hands-on, outdoor, and project-based experiences rooted in real life. From tending gardens and caring for animals to building, creating, exploring, and collaborating, children are actively engaged in meaningful work that builds both knowledge and confidence.

ROOTS offers a 4-day school program that serves as a true alternative to traditional
education, as well as 1-day and 2-day homeschool enrichment programs designed
specifically for homeschooling families.
Our approach integrates:
- Standards-aligned academics (math, reading, writing, science)
- Social-emotional learning (SEL)
- Life skills and real-world application
- Environmental stewardship and community connection
Rather than always separating subjects, we also weave academics into daily experiences,
helping children understand not just what they are learning—but why it matters.

NOW ENROLLING for the September 2026-2027 School Year! Come experience the magic of nature-based learning at ROOTS Farm & Forest School.

A School That Blends Academics with Real Life

Learning Through Experience

Our outdoor classrooms include gardens, food forests, natural play spaces, and  animal care areas—creating an environment where children can learn through doing.

Students engage in:
- Project-based learning tied to real-world outcomes
- STEAM-based activities and problem-solving
- Community service and collaborative projects
- Nature exploration and environmental studies
- Creative expression through art, building, and storytelling
This approach fosters critical thinking, independence, resilience, and a deep  connection to the natural world.

With a low 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, we are able to truly see and support each child. We honor all learning styles—whether auditory, visual, tactile, or kinesthetic—and  create space for children to grow at their own pace while still being challenged and supported.
Our programs are designed to support both neurotypical and neurodivergent learners, creating an inclusive environment where every child feels valued, capable, and confident.

Students build a strong foundation in both academics and real-world learning, engaging in standards-aligned academics including math, reading, writing, and science. Additional subjects such as social studies and history are naturally integrated into projects and hands-on experiences, allowing learning to feel connected and meaningful.

The 4-Day Elementary program is designed as a multi-family homeschool model, providing a full, comprehensive, well-rounded learning experience that supports families in meeting their child's educational needs through academics, enrichment, and community-based learning.

Monday – Thursday, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Thursdays are Forest Day, held at a local forest)

4 day program - $285/week (ages 5-9)

School Age (Ages 5-9 years)

These skills are woven into experiential learning and project-based experiences, allowing children to learn through doing—whether in the garden, through building projects, storytelling, or while exploring the natural world. This program balances teacher-guided instruction with child-led exploration, while also intentionally incorporating social-emotional learning (SEL) to support emotional awareness, self-regulation, relationship-building, and confidence.

Through collaborative projects, daily responsibilities, and consistent rhythms, students develop independence, communication skills, and a sense of responsibility within their learning community. Weekly Forest Days provide immersive opportunities for deeper nature connection,
hands-on learning, and continued skill development in a real-world setting.

For example, one student chose to start a jewelry business: she selected the type of  jewelry she wanted to design, conducted market research, wrote a business plan, created  branding and a logo, developed a budget, learned jewelry-making through research and mentorship, produced her products, and presented and sold her jewelry. Other student-led projects have included writing, illustrating, and publishing a joke book; designing and building a haunted house experience; creating a fully functional board game; and researching and preparing for a sugar glider.
These projects allow students to apply academics in real and meaningful ways—integrating  math, writing, research, critical thinking, and creativity into something they genuinely care about. With an emphasis on leadership, peer relationships, and confidence-building, students step into leadership roles, mentor younger peers, and take ownership within the learning community. Through collaboration, presentations, and shared experiences, students build communication skills, emotional intelligence, and the confidence to express ideas and lead meaningfully.
Weekly Forest Days and outdoor challenges—such as orienteering, nature-based problem-solving,
and skill-building—further support independence, adaptability, and self-trust. The program
culminates in Project Showcases, where students present their work, celebrate their growth,
and demonstrate their creativity, skills, and contributions to the community.

The 4-Day Middle School program is a continuation of our multi-family homeschool model, providing a full, comprehensive, well-rounded learning experience that supports families in meeting their child's educational needs through advanced academics, enrichment, and real-world application. At the core of this program are student-driven, full-cycle projects that serve as the foundation of learning. Students engage in both individualized passion projects chosen by the student and ongoing group projects that typically span around six weeks. Each project is designed to move from idea to execution—planning, researching, creating, and presenting.
