She’s also an avid reader and loves spending time with her two dogs and cat who bring endless joy to her life. She is thrilled to be part of the ROOTS community, inspiring her students to explore, learn, and connect with the world around them.

Courtney Brinsfield is a dedicated educator with a Master’s in Education and seven years of experience in the public school system. However, her passion for working with children never wavered. After discovering ROOTS, a Farm & Forest school, Courtney realized she had found the perfect environment where she could nurture the kinds of deep, meaningful relationships with students that she’d always hoped for. After becoming a mother, Heather’s curiosity led her to further explore early childhood education, and she discovered a deep passion for fostering children's innate love of learning. Through her research and post graduate studies in education, she came to believe that children thrive when they spend more time outdoors, engaged in self-directed learning. This philosophy led her to the forest school model, which she sees as the ideal environment for nurturing social-emotional intelligence, creativity, and self-sufficiency. Completing the Forest School Teacher Institute’s Teacher Training further strengthened her passion for outdoor learning. Heather is excited to guide children in exploring the wonders of nature, building confidence, and developing a sense of curiosity and resilience that will serve them for a lifetime. Heather, and her husband Nathan, are thrilled for their own children to be a part of this community that goes back to the roots of education.

Heather is excited to be joining ROOTS Farm & Forest School as the Pre-School teacher. This role brings together so many of her passions and ideals. Her most important goal as a teacher is to nurture a child’s curiosity and to help them develop a lifelong love of learning. She believes that learning outside presents an amazing opportunity for children because it supports their physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development in ways that indoor environments often cannot.
Heather brings a rich background in movement, mindfulness, and holistic wellness to her work in early childhood education. She holds a BS in Communications from Boston University and is an experienced yoga instructor and trainer who owned and operated a yoga studio and wellness center for many years. As a licensed massage therapist, she deepened her understanding of body awareness and well-being. Heather’s first exposure to the value of outdoor learning for children came when she lived in Ecuador and did volunteer work at a rural elementary school and lead the children in outdoor activities such as yoga, surfing, and beach cleanup (to promote an awareness of environmental stewardship).

I’m Dakotah Greif, homeschooling mom to 2 beautiful children and wife to a wonderful entrepreneurial husband. As a pediatric physical therapist by trade, I was able to see the ups and downs to traditional public schooling through my career so that when it was time to look at education options for my eldest son, I knew there were better environments that he may thrive in. That is when I researched and learned all about the non-traditional ways of learning and have been able to watch my son thrive in the ROOTS homeschool classes. When not at ROOTS, you can find me getting into some project on my homestead and hanging with my family, dogs, cat and many chickens. I am excited to be able to continue another year at ROOTS!

Lauren lives on a seven-acre homestead with her husband, Paul, their cat, Cotton, and a flock of twelve chickens. She is thrilled to be joining ROOTS for another school year.

Lauren’s lifelong passion is connection—deepening connection with nature, others, and oneself. Guided by values of creativity, freedom, presence, and play, she was immediately drawn to the ROOTS community and knew she wanted to be part of it. Lauren is a graduate of the University of Delaware and has a background in outdoor, experience-based education and regenerative agriculture.

Many of her favorite moments have taken place while exploring nature—wading through Delaware’s vernal pools to the Spring chorus of amphibians, participating in student-led silent meetings in the forests of Vermont, and eating fresh picked tomatoes out of every garden possible. She believes in bringing a sense of aliveness and belonging to her classes at ROOTS Farm & Forest School.

As a new mom I read everything I could about raising a well regulated kid. In everything I read, nature and forest school kept popping up. The more I read and researched the more I wanted this for my child. When the opportunity arose to not only have my son attend the Farm and Forest School but to work with them I could not have said yes fast enough.

I hope all the students get to develop an appreciation and respect for nature.

In college I majored in Recreation and Leisure studies with courses in outdoor education and inclusive recreation. I am a nature lover and a camping/hiking enthusiast.

My passion for nature, sunshine, the beach, plants, and all things environment lead me to research homeschooling for the boys. Shortly after, I discovered ROOTS and was thrilled at the opportunity for my kids to discover the unlimited benefits of nature/forest school. Shortly after meeting Talon, Travis and the rest of the staff, I knew this was a place we could all evolve, and learn together. I look forward to un-programming my brain from what is considered “standard” education, and watching my kids and others thrive in a student led environment.

My background is a Bachelors degree in Behavioral science. And a Masters in Elementary Education. I am a certified birth doula, nutrition coach, and (soon to be) Forest/Nature school teacher!

Mom of 3 very energetic boys. Wife to a small business owner. Life long Delaware resident. Which means I also know the conditions of the public and traditional schools. Especially downstate. When our oldest (6) was approaching kindergarten I went into deep holes about how I could best serve him and his brothers by allowing them to develop and learn and thrive without being confined to desks, four walls and standardized testing.

Raised in Delaware, I grew up immersed in the outdoors, exploring the woods with my siblings, fishing with my dad, and developing a deep love for nature. Now, my family and I live on a homestead where we currently have a vegetable garden, goats, chickens, rabbits, and a livestock guardian dog. I involve my children in all aspects of gardening and caring for our animals, cultivating responsibility and a strong connection to the land as we work side by side. I love baking, crafting, crocheting, hiking, and learning different ways enhance the sustainability of our homestead. With over a decade of instructional experience, I am committed to creating a supportive, engaging environment where children can build confidence, resilience, and a meaningful connection to the earth. After beginning our homeschooling journey and intentionally incorporating more outdoor education, I knew we had found our community when we discovered ROOTS. I am excited to help children continue growing in confidence, resilience, and connection to our natural world.

Growing up on a small family homestead in South Jersey with lots of animals, I have always been passionate about spending time outdoors. I pursued a Master’s degree in Elementary Education and then spent over ten years working with children from Pre-K through 5th grade in the classroom and as a technology educator. After becoming a parent to three children,- ages 7 to 12- my perspective on education evolved, sparking a strong interest in alternative approaches that incorporate nature and hands-on learning.
Outside of my professional experience, I enjoy baking, spending time outdoors, camping, reading, and staying active through workouts at DESAC and practicing yoga. Traveling and exploring new places also brings me joy. Having lived in Delaware for the past decade, I’ve grown to love the area, especially Cape Henlopen which is one of my favorite places. I value community, connection, and creating meaningful experiences for children and families. I am so thrilled to become a part of the ROOTS team!

Growing up in upstate New York in the 70s, playing outside was a large part of my childhood. Those experiences helped develop my love for nature, feelings of connection to the natural world, desire to protect it and later share that passion with children of all ages.
When my family moved to Delaware in the early 80s, I had the opportunity to explore the rural landscape of Magnolia by going on long bike rides on my own or with my cousins. I developed a strong kinship with trees and plants and with the encouragement of agriculture teachers, I pursued a Bachelor's in Plant Science. Shortly after I decided that education was my calling; teaching high school Biology for three years and then preschool for four. After learning more about child-led, play and nature-based preschool programs, I started my own where I've been the director and teacher for the past six years.
Outside of my career I enjoy gardening, exploring new cultures through food and film, birding, visiting art museums, and attending poetry readings.
I am excited to start my next chapter with the ROOTS team this fall!
